WHITE CO.—Illinois State Police (ISP) District 19 Commander Captain Morrie Fraser has released information concerning the arrest of an individual from East St. Louis, Missouri, following a traffic stop on Interstate 64 in rural White County on Thursday, 04/04/13, at approximately 6:56pm. Arrested was Sherman Levelle Nicholson, Jr., age 29.
According to Captain Fraser, on the evening of Thursday, 04.04.13, an ISP District 19 trooper stopped a 2003 Chevrolet passenger car on Interstate 64 at milepost 123 for speeding, 81 mph in a 65 mph zone. While speaking with the driver, Nicholson, the trooper detected the odor of cannabis emitting from inside the vehicle. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, 468 grams of cannabis was discovered. Grayville Police Officer Sergeant Jess Burley and his K-9 Officer Tara assisted at the scene.
Nicholson was arrested and charged with Possession of Cannabis (more than 30 grams, but less than 500 grams), a Class 3 Felony, and DUI – Drugs, a Class A Misdemeanor. In addition, Nicholson was issued a citation for Speeding. Nicholson was transported to the White County Jail in Carmi, Illinois, where he was held pending a court appearance.
Captain Fraser stated, “As we have seen so often before, aggressive enforcement of a traffic violation, speeding in this instance, has resulted in the removal of drugs from our highways. District 19 Troopers will continue to make it a priority to focus on traffic enforcement, as well as other efforts to rid our highways and communities of illegal drugs and impaired drivers.”
