We’re about to withdraw our support for the First Amendment under certain circumstances.
In the past, we’ve actually appeared to “take the side” of the looney-tunes Westboro Baptist Church out in some damn place in Kansas. It’s never been because we believe in what they do. They’re nuts. But because they’re doubly protected in Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion under the First Amendment, we’ve up to this point defended their right to protest funerals, which they’ve been doing for the better part of the past five years in misguided attempts to convince people that soldiers’ deaths during time of war are due to America’s acceptance of homosexuality. You know….the “God hates Fags” sign wavers? Yup. Nutcases.
Well, we’re over that. And we wish now that they’d just shut the fuck up and burn in that hell they keep espousing. Below, you’ll see why.

These pointless bags of human flesh are saying they’re going to be in Harrisburg Saturday morning for the first funerals of those who lost their lives in yesterday’s (Feb. 29) tornado. They say that Harrisburg’s wickedness is what brought the EF4 down on them. They say that the six known (reported) deaths are because of God’s vengeful wrath and showing Illinois who’s Boss. Yep, our state legislature is the reason why these six are deceased.
We we—and a host of people we know—are saying BULLSHIT to that.
A group is getting organized, therefore, to fight this. It can’t be fought via laws; it can’t be fought with weapons; so it’s going to be fought with common sense.
This group is going to form a “human shield” Saturday between the grieving and the freaks. We’ve been contacted by the group’s organizer, who’s asked us to start getting the word out. There’s a Facebook page, so please plan to clear your schedule for Saturday morning, click “join” and plan to attend. The communities stricken by the storm have shown some of the most amazing, charitable, hospitable, and generous spirit we’ve ever seen….and we’ve covered a lot of disasters in our combined 30-some years in media. So Saturday, make plans to join the human shield, being called “Shield of Support,” and let’s show these Kansas cretins that they’re nothing by comparison to the caring people in southern Illinois….NONE of whom “deserved” anything bad to happen to them, through ANYONE’S actions, their own or others’.
