AWESOME work by the Southern Illinoisan staff!

WEST FRANKFORT—In answer to the question, “Who’s idiot enough to rob a bank these days?” comes the answer in the form of this story emerging from West Frankfort.

While we may be uber critical of the way most newspapers are run these days, as the vast majority of them are corporate and answer to their corporate masters and not the people in the communities they serve, the one that usually escapes our criticism is the Southern Illinoisan, primarily because they have an excellent group of people staffing the place. That’s evidenced in the report above, and the screen cap we took this morning of this AMAZING shot obtained by Steve Jahnke:

Incredible coverage!

It’s true that a large part of getting a shot like that is being in the right place at the right time, but when the adrenaline’s pumping and there’s a lot of chaos because a suspect is face down on the ground, it’s hard to keep the camera steady sometimes; I know, because it’s happened to me at an identical incident out on Route 1 south of Grayville, as well as the scene of a cop shooting in Oakland City, Indiana. But to have captured the suspect’s expression like this is an even more difficult task, and Jahnke has done it. Kudos to him!

Also, notice the byline for the wondrous and awesome Ms. Malkovich, who is a reporter extraordinaire. As we repeatedly have stated in our old podcasts, we luv Ms. Malkovich, and we mean it. She is everything an astute journalist should be, and it shows repeatedly in her work. We got to know her during the Raymond Martin debacle when it first kicked off in May 2009, and our respect for her and her work simply grew from there. She continues to excel, and the Southern should be proud of her. Wish we could clone her and put one of her in every county for US!!

Anyway, you can read all about the bank robbery at the link…good job authorities on apprehending the suspects…we’re sure they’ll be taken care of in Franklin County or wherever they end up. And good job, Southern crew! Time for a bonus, maybe….?
