CRAWFORD CO.—A second day of searching has provided no leads for authorities as to the whereabouts of prison escapee Jared Carter.
But it isn’t for lack of trying.
Authorities in Crawford, including sheriff’s personnel, Robinson city police, Department of Corrections teams and U.S. Marshals, have been joined by other jurisdictions in an effort to track down Carter, who escaped yesterday morning (Friday, August 30, 2013) from Robinson Correctional Center off Illinois Route 1 northeast of Robinson.
Carter was locked up on Bond, Madison and Clinton county sentences of burglary, forgery and theft. He was scheduled to be paroled in late 2016. He walked away from a work crew detail outside the perimeter of the prison grounds.
There haven’t been reports of sightings today (Saturday, August 31, 2013), but there has been significant activity, including pseudo roadblocks at key junctures on the area’s highways (in particular the one featured earlier today in Olney, due south and west of Crawford Crawford), and some reports of authorities staging at what appeared to be key locations to be searched. However, nothing of note was released by authorities, as regards what was found at the locations.
Disclosure has learned, however, that the Huck’s store in Robinson may have been where Carter stopped and picked up supplies…and the reports indicate that he did so with money. Who provided him the money would of course be the question of the day, and the answer to that is simply not available yet. But Disclosure sources were told by a Huck’s employee earlier today that police had been in to view the cameras; and the employee who identified the man as Carter was the one who spoke with Disclosure‘s sources. So whether this pans out or not remains to be seen.
Another piece of information is the fact that Carter’s wife, Sheila, had filed for a divorce in Crawford County on July 18. The employee at Huck’s advised that it was her belief that “Carter’s girlfriend” was the one who may have provided money for him. We won’t be able to learn much more about that situation until we’re able to view the file. Which won’t be until Tuesday, with Monday being a holiday.
We have been able to clarify that the report that Carter accessed a former judge’s house yesterday was extrapolated, apparently. The fact that Carter had phoned his sister in Oklahoma prompted a search of the phone number, thanks to the sister alerting authorities. The number, we were told, traced back to Judge Hill’s residence, so it was assumed by authorities that Carter had broken in. However, a reader dissented with that information, prompting us to call authorities and finally track back that the number was mistakenly identified as Judge Hill’s (who was on vacation, and the house therefore empty.) Where the number came from remains unknown at this time, however; our sources were uncertain of the trackback on it. We’ve not been able to reach the public information office at DOC, since it’s Saturday, so information might be spotty until we can.
In the meantime, be extremely vigilant; Carter apparently at one point in his criminal career was a pretty good burglar, and we’ve been told by authorities that he has been known to burglarize, and steal, vehicles. Keep all doors and windows locked, and call authorities if you encounter anything suspicious, no matter where you are in the readership area.
