MT. CARMEL, Ill. - Looks like it was a fun time in town last week for Mt. Carmel City Police, as these reports from the latest blotter show.

All the way over from Indiana to cause probs

This past Thursday, March 21, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Jeremiah J. Deal, 43, of Newburgh, Ind., for Possession of a Hypodermic Needle and Disorderly Conduct following a call regarding an unwanted person in the 1100 block of West Third Street. Once police arrived, they spoke to the complainant who reported that Deal had entered their residence and attempted to start an altercation with the complainant. Officers located the suspect, identified as Deal, and placed him under arrest. During the arrest for Disorderly Conduct, officers located a hypodermic needle in Deal’s property. Deal was transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged and held pending the posting of bond.

Grayville resident arrested on FTA

Friday, March 22, saw a lot of activity. Mt. Carmel Police arrested Shawn Swift, 38, of Grayville, on a Wabash County Failure to Appear warrant. Swift was found to be a passenger in a red Suzuki that was stopped in the 200 block of West Ninth Street. Swift was taken into custody and transported to the Wabash County Jail where he is being held pending the posting of bond. Online records show that Swift still owes a balance of $3,108 in unpaid fines and fees from the April 2018 Forgery case for which he was convicted back in October.

Tommy’s back in jail

As well on Friday, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Tommy L. Askren, 37, of Mt. Carmel on a Wabash County Failure to Appear warrant. Askren was observed in the 1100 block of Poplar Street and taken into custody. Askren was transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was issued the warrant and held pending the posting of bond. Askren, who continues screwing up a sentence on a Controlled Substance charge dating back to 2005, has also now screwed up a case that prosecutor Cassandra Goldman was nice enough to give him a break on, that of a misdemeanor count of Battery, which was originally filed as a Class 3 felony Aggravated Battery case on New Year’s Eve 2017. He owes only $627 in fines and fees on that case but has only paid $200 toward it, likely bond, so apparently arresting him and hoping he’ll bond out so money can be recovered is the option here.

Such a young age for a DUI

Then lastly on the 22nd, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Erika A.E. Cole, 23, of Fairfield, for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol following a public complaint about a reckless driver coming into Mt. Carmel from Indiana. The arresting officer located the suspect vehicle, a white Mitsubishi, on South Walnut Street. After observing violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code (improper lane usage), the vehicle was stopped. The officer suspected impairment from alcohol consumption so sobriety testing was conducted. Cole showed clues to indicate impairment and was placed under arrest. She was transported to the Wabash County Jail where she was charged for DUI, Operating Uninsured Vehicle and Improper Lane Usage.  Cole was held pending the posting of bond.

He’s from Crossville. OF COURSE he is.

Then on Saturday, March 23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Damion K. Miller, 34, of Crossville, following a request for police to a residence in the 100 block of S. Daniel Street in Mt. Carmel. The caller reported finding an unknown male subject, sleeping on their couch, with their front door standing open. Officers arrived and located Miller on the couch. When contact was made with Miller, he became combative and resisted arrest. Miller was eventually taken into custody and transported to the Wabash County Jail. He’s being charged with felony Criminal Trespass to Residence and Resisting a Peace Officer, as well as an additional ordinance violation of Possession of Cannabis less than 10 grams. Miller was being held pending a bond setting by a judge.
