CARMI, Ill. - Carmi Police Chief Jason Carter reports that his department had only a couple of incidents in the last 24 hours, one of them a DUI, the other a case of alleged retail theft.

The DUI came about very early this morning, Friday, November 9, when at 1:31 a.m., a patrolling officer made a vehicle stop on Church Street at Cherry Street. The vehicle, it was reported, didn't have on its headlights nor tail lights.

James A. Smith

James A. Smith, 27, of Iris Lane in Carmi, was taken into custody on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence, however. Smith was able to post bond of $100 and his driver's license, and presumably was able to find someone to drive him the few blocks to his residence from the jail.

Heather Riggle

Earlier Thursday, November 8 (at 2:40 p.m.), a responding officer drove to 607 Oak Street and placed Heather Riggle under arrest on warrants for Retail Theft and Criminal Trespass.

Bond was set at $150 for each warrant; Riggle, 40, of the 600 block of Oak Street in Carmi, remained locked up as of this afternoon (Friday, Nov. 9).
