PITTSBURG, Ill. - A fire swept through a furniture store in the village of Pittsburg in Williamson County as of about 12 p.m. today.
The fire was burning the newer section of Anderson's Warehouse Furniture, which, we're being told at the scene, was constructed only two years ago.
Bill Anderson developed the business, which has been on this site for at least four decades, according to residents on-scene. It was open and employees and customers were at the business when the fire erupted. Everyone evacuated okay, and there are no injuries.
Those on-scene are advising that they believe the fire may have started in wiring in the ceiling of the new section, judging by where the fire was noticed. Two customers, Rodney Jones and Bryan Helvey, were the ones who saw the sparks and notified the employees.
Fire departments from Pittsburg, Johnston City, Herrin, West City, Marion, Carterville, Eldorado, Shawneetown and Williamson County, were all on-scene at about 12:30, and a tanker from one of the local departments was observed at one of the area strip pits pulling up water. More assistance was arriving at 12:30. Harrisburg, Carrier Mills and Goreville also arrived at the scene shortly after we delivered this report. Williamson County Sheriff's Office and Johnston City Police are at the scene for traffic control and to keep people away from getting to close to the building, as it's a large structure.
