NEWTON—We’ve been advised there’s been a shooting death in the city of Newton in Jasper County.
Here’s a press release we’ve just been sent:
On Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 4:02pm, the Newton Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, the Jasper County Ambulance Service responded to the intersection of Maple and Washington Streets in Newton for a gunshot victim. Upon arrival of officers and Paramedics, the Jasper County Coroner’s Office was alerted, who pronounced the individual deceased on scene. Newton Police Officer Adam Deckard took an individual into custody shortly after arrival, who has been transported to the Jasper County Jail. Illinois State Police Investigations Zone 7 is enroute to the location. More information will be made available later by Chief Mike Swick.
Note that it’s apparently not a self-inflicted gunshot as someone is in custody…however, it’s not being termed a homicide yet.
