SALINE CO.—Long-time dope felon Cecil Gulley finally lost his fight with colon cancer Sunday, June 3.

Cecil Gulley from March 2010 arrest

Gulley, 51 and originally of Carrier Mills, who was still under indictment from January 2011 when he died, had been out of jail at the Saline County Detention Center (SCDC) for a number of months while seeking treatment for the condition. The most recent infractions Gulley was under suspicion of were meth manufacturing, and pot, cocaine and pills delivery. Those charges, as of today (June 5) have been dismissed. Gulley had had as his representation Benton attorney Bryan Drew, whose efforts, this time, at least, outlived his client.

Gulley’s criminal exploits in and around Saline date back some 25 years and are fairly monumental. Gulley has had his hand in a number of major criminal rings for these past couple of decades; his arrest last year has resulted in a number of other key players being either arrested or at least eyeballed, but whether it put a dent in the local dope trade or not remains largely unknown.

He was released on a recognizance bond a few months back in order to seek treatment for the cancer, thus taking the onus for payment of said treatment off the backs of the Saline County taxpayers. He’s now saved them a costly trial, which Drew would likely have lost anyway.
