ILLINOIS— Illinois State Police Sergeant Mark Zimmerman (Dist. 19) has announced a statewide program, which targets four fatal traffic violations, to be implemented during the Labor Day weekend.
“Law enforcement officials are reminding motorists to take the necessary safety precautions to prevent senseless tragedies during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend,” Zimmerman said. “Beginning Friday, August 29 through Tuesday, September 2 the Illinois State Police will enforce the four most common traffic violations associated with fatal traffic crashes: speeding, DUI, seat belts and distracted driving.”
And while Zimmerman didn’t mention anything specific, he did say that troopers will also be on heightened alert monitoring intelligence from the Statewide Terrorism Intelligence Center for suspicious vehicles, special alerts, and any criminal activity crossing state lines.
“Labor Day marks the end of summer for families and the beginning of a new school year,” Zimmerman said. “Many families and young adults will be on the roads and especially vulnerable to driving under the influence.”
“Since 2007, state police have been focused on the Fatal 4 mission striving to reduce the number of fatalities,” said Illinois State Police Director Hiram Grau. “Troopers statewide will be enforcing the Fatal 4 traffic laws, and those motorists who choose to violate the traffic laws could encounter tragic consequences or even face jail time.”
District 19’s Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement (ACE) patrols and Roadside Safety Checks (RSC) will also be operational during the said time period.
Driving under the influence is still the number one cause for traffic crashes and fatalities, especially during holiday celebrations.
“Designating a driver or arranging for public transportation saves lives,” Zimmerman said. “Drinking and driving is a deadly combination.”
Nearly two out of five Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related traffic crash, with over 40 percent resulting in a fatality.
“District 19 Troopers will be out to ensure the safety of all travelers this upcoming Labor Day Holiday Weekend. Please assist us by following the speed limit, designating a sober driver, wearing your seat belt, and driving distraction free. Enjoy your holiday weekend, but make safe and responsible decisions behind the wheel,” said Dist. 19 Commander Kelly Hodge.
