LAWRENCE CO.— In one of the most prolific drug counties in southern Illinois for its size, Lawrence County lawmen continue to battle the scourge of drugs proliferating in rural communities.

A St. Francisville man has been charged with Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance.

According to information filed in the case, on July 9, Kaleb A. Goodwin, 19, of 1077 Cherry St., St. Francisville, was at 708 John, St. Francisville when he knowingly and unlawfully had in his possession less than 15 grams of a substance containing morphine, a controlled substance.

Goodwin was released from custody July 16, after Tracy A. Goodwin posted a $1,500 cash bond on his behalf.

 Repeat meth offender

Jeffery Shane Metz, 37, of Lawrenceville, has been charged with Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine.

According to authorities, on July 15, Metz was in the 1600 block of 5th Street in Lawrenceville when he knowingly possessed less than five grams of methamphetamine or a substance containing methamphetamine.

In October 2003, Metz was convicted of Unlawful Possession of Hypodermic/Syringe/Needles/2nd+ and sentenced to two years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) and ordered to pay $406 in fines and fees.

In January 2006, he was convicted of Unlawful Meth Precursor less than 15 grams, Unlawful Possession of Meth Manufacturing Material and Unlawful Possession of Meth less than five grams.

Metz was sentenced to five years in IDOC and ordered to pay $1,212 in fines and fees, of which he still owes $1,022.

Prison math being what it is, Metz was back on the streets in time to be convicted again of Unlawful Possession of Meth less than five grams in Oct. 2009 for which he was sentenced to another five years in IDOC, ordered to undergo drug treatment and pay $240 in fines and fees, of which he’s paid nothing.

Metz currently has a pending charge from February 2012 of Unlawful Possession of Meth less than five grams.

Cash bond in the case was set at $5,000.

A motion to reduce bail was filed on July 30.
