HARRISBURG, Ill.—Ron Crank, who was installed as mayor of Harrisburg a little more than a year ago, has died.
Crank, a former police officer for the city, was moved up to the position of mayor after the resignation of Eric Gregg on July 8, 2013.
However, in the several months prior to that, Crank had been undergoing treatment for a brain tumor that was cancerous, and it had kept him out of the commissioner’s seat for several months. He had just gotten back on his feet following treatment when Gregg’s resignation was announced, and by virtue of the way Harrisburg’s city council is structured, the position of mayor fell to Crank when it came open.
Upon Crank’s death, the next city council member to fall in line for the position of mayor goes to former mayor Ron Fearheiley.
There is a city council meeting tonight; we’ll have an update on things when that’s over with.
Our sympathies to the family of Ron Crank; he fought an epic battle while so many watched, a difficult thing to do, but he did so with honor.
