CRAWFORD CO., Ill.—A township road commissioner in Crawford County has been jailed on multiple, very serious counts, after a DUI stop lead to a little something more.

Montgomery Township Road Commissioner Ed Carpenter

Ed Carpenter, 72 and the elected Montgomery Township Road Commissioner, was apparently the subject of a county traffic stop July 1, which resulted in a Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol citation as well as a No Valid Registration ticket.

However, when the situation was investigated a little more, there was something else allegedly discovered: meth.

Carpenter, who, according to information we’re getting in this morning hasn’t made a whole lot of friends in his township due to past behavior (we’ll cover that in the next issue, on stands August 13), was jailed at that time and only posted bond on July 10.

For whatever reason, a next court hearing hasn’t been set in the case; online documents show that there hasn’t even been an arraignment. This may or may not be due to the fact that the man is a public official and prosecutor Matt Hartrich might be a little stymied as to what to do about him, as regards whether he can prosecute Carpenter or whether he’ll have to bring in a special prosecutor. We’ll have lots in the next issue, as the July-August edition is getting on the stands right now. Don’t miss either on; watch for deliveries today, and e-Edition is, of course, available right now if you have an online membership. Get clicking!
