SALINE CO. (CARRIER MILLS), Ill.—The cause of this afternoon’s car crash on Tuller Road that left an 18-year-old newlywed dead is still under investigation by Illinois State Police.
The accident occurred a half-mile south of U.S. 45 in Saline County on Tuller Road, outside of Carrier Mills today (June 22, 2014) at about 12:10 p.m.
ISP reports that the driver of the 2004 Ford F150 involved in the accident was Machaela A. Sherrod, age 18, of Harrisburg, Illinois. Her passenger was her new husband, John A. Gould, age 22, of Omaha, Illinois.
While the accident remains under investigation by ISP and more will be released, according to the preliminary traffic crash investigation, Sherrod was southbound on Tuller Road, approximately a half-mile south of U.S. 45 in Saline County, when for an unknown reason she drove off the left side of the roadway, down an embankment, and overturned in a ditch.
Sherrod was trapped in the vehicle, and pronounced deceased at the scene by the Saline County Coroner.
Gould was initially transported from the crash scene to an area hospital by the Saline County Ambulance Service, and then later flown to an Evansville, Indiana, hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the traffic crash.
ISP reports that Sherrod was not wearing her seatbelt; and that Gould was.
Our sources here in Saline County have advised us that the two had been married last night. Our deepest condolences to the family over this tragedy.
