HARRISBURG, Ill. — There has been yet another wreck at the dangerous Route 13 Bypass intersection in Harrisburg this afternoon (Tuesday, June 17, 2014).
We don’t have details, but Harrisburg police have been contacted by our staff and are to be returning our call shortly; when they do, we’ll bring you the updated information. For right now, we do know that the driver of the car pictured here is Heather Bennett, 23, of Carrier Mills. She’s being observed right now at an area hospital. She is pregnant and is within a couple of weeks of having her baby; it’s believed her water may have broken in the accident, so she’s being treated and family is keeping us apprised.
The Harrisburg Bill Franks Bypass intersection with Poplar Street has become known as an extremely dangerous spot for motorists, and the Harrisburg City Council along with the Saline County Sheriff’s Department and Harrisburg Police Department have been pushing for increased safety measures over the past few months.
IDOT has been working with the requests for increased safety in the intersection, but for now have only approved minimal changes, one of which being moving the reduced speed limit signs an additional 500 feet to the west of the intersection.
Requests from local government agencies for a stop light and other safety measures have been denied by IDOT thus far, but the ever increasing numbers of accidents at the intersection are increasing the pressure for more attention and action from IDOT.
