LAWRENCEVILLE, Ill.—More information has been made available today about the May 30 death of a well-known Lawrenceville man.

mr k's“Mr. K,” as Joe Krych was known in Lawrenceville (as he owned the former Mr. K’s motel on the city’s east side for years) was found deceased in his home Friday afternoon.

A postal carrier, Michael Sechrest, was the one who noticed something amiss at the Krych residence when he went to deliver the mail that day at about 4 p.m., according to Lawrenceville officials. There appeared to be four days’ worth of mail in the box at 2113 Maple Street, and three newspapers. Sechrest called the local police dispatch and advised this, and Lawrenceville police were sent to the home for a well-being check.

While police chief Jim White went to the house, other officials were asking folks in the area when the last time Mr. K, who was 94, was seen out and about and they learned that he’d last been encountered on Memorial Day Monday…so it appeared that the mail was an accumulation of Tuesday through Friday.

White said that after getting no response to knocking on the door of the residence or to his calls at the door to raise someone from inside, he had to break a side glass to get into Mr. K’s home. Once inside, White reported there was nothing disturbed and no evidence of foul play; but unfortunately, they did locate Mr. K’s body.

Mr. K lived alone, White said, and had family outside of the area, so there was no one locally to check on him. While there’s no official word on cause of death at this time, authorities did note that it may very well have been that Mr. K died peacefully in his sleep.

No funeral arrangements have been announced yet.
