Update on possible suicide in Saline

SALINE CO.—Friends of a young man who was reported to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on New Year’s Day are now reporting that his death appears to have been a tragic accident.

Cody Cowger

According to close friends of Cody Cowger (who asked that they not be named for this article), what appeared at first to be a suicide was a situation that could have happened to anyone: Cowger, 22, had purchased a 9mm pistol recently. On the day in question, he was trying to get a bullet unlodged from the weapon when his dog jumped up on him and he dropped the gun. He bent over to catch the weapon and that action reportedly cause the gun to discharge.

“The bullet caught him in the forehead and came out behind the ear,” a friend told Disclosure, which explained why an initial assessment was that suicide couldn’t necessarily be ruled out.

The friends were insistent that rumors abounding about Cowger being killed by someone else were just that—RUMORS. There is NO validity to it whatsoever, and there’s been no investigation into such a thing, that we have been able to ascertain.

The tragedy that ended Cowger’s life is illustrative of gun safety, however, and is a call to all of us as responsible gun owners to use caution when handling our firearms, because you just never know. Our sympathies are with the family; while little comfort can be found, an accident is just that—an accident—and is easier to face than a murder or suicide.
