SAN ANTONIO, TX—The family of a San Antonio man shot and killed by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy Saturday has called on Sheriff Susan Pamerleau to take an active role in the investigation. ”It seems like the investigation started off completely wrong and I hope she gets involved. I hope she cleans that up. I hope she helps us find the right answers and these missteps get corrected,” said Patrick Jackson. His 29-year-old brother Mathew was shot and killed around 5 a.m. Saturday, after what investigators described as an “altercation” with an off-duty deputy on Loop 1604 between Nacogdoches and Lookout Road.
Tuesday, a sheriff’s office spokesman told KENS 5 the deputy involved is 16-year veteran Anthony Thomas. A chart inside the court administration office indicates Thomas works as a bailiff in one of the county’s civil courts. He told investigators he was driving home from an off-duty security job when he and Jackson were involved in a minor traffic accident. Jackson was headed home from his job as a waiter at 20nine Wine Bar and a brief stop at a friend’s house.
Both men pulled over to the shoulder of the freeway after the incident. ”Whatever incident occurred that made them pull over, I don’t understand what would have made them angry enough in a mile or two for this to escalate like that,” added Patrick. Sometime shortly thereafter Deputy Thomas fired several shots at Jackson. The county’s medical examiner confirmed Monday Jackson died of a gunshot wound to the chest. A key part of the investigation hinges on where Jackson was when Thomas began to shoot.
