CRAWFORD CO.—We’ve received an update on the status of formerly escaped prisoner Jared Carter in Robinson.
DOC reports that offender Jared Carter has been examined at Robinson Correctional Center’s Health Care Unit and is now being interviewed by IDOC officers in this phase of the Department’s investigation of this matter. He will then be transferred to a maximum-security prison.
Here’s the official press release from IDOC on the apprehension of the man who eluded authorities for four days in Crawford County, prompted ISP to release a statement that he may have stolen a vehicle in Fairfield and could be headed toward Oklahoma, and even inspired one woman to make a false statement to police, possibly in an effort to gain attention for herself:

Jared Carter has been apprehended and is in custody in the Crawford (IL) County jail. Carter was stopped today as he walked down a street in Palestine (IL) by the Palestine Police Chief Jeffrey Besing and other law enforcement personnel. They were following up on a tip received from the community in the command center staffed during the afternoon by the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) and Robinson Police Department.
Palestine is seven miles from the Robinson Correctional Center, a minimum-security facility, where Carter had been an inmate-trustee allowed to work on prison grounds, outside prison walls. He walked away from the property on the morning of Friday, August 30, 2013.
According to early reports from IDOC personnel in the field, Carter was approached in Palestine at approximately 3:45 p.m. today and ordered to produce identification. He described himself as the escapee from Robinson CC, saying, “I’m who you’re looking for.” He surrendered without any confrontation.
After brief questioning, Carter was taken into custody at the scene by Chief Besing and immediately brought to the Crawford County jail, where he was positively identified by IDOC Chief Public Safety Officer Brad Curry.
Carter was later taken back to Robinson CC for a medical examination and treatment of minor injuries he suffered prior to recapture. He was to be interviewed as part of IDOC’s investigation into this matter and then transported this evening to an IDOC maximum-security prison.
IDOC, U.S. Marshalls, the Illinois State Police, Crawford County Sheriff’s department and Robinson Police Department joined forces in the search for Carter. Hundreds of leads were followed and every home and business in Robinson was checked.
“The support of the people of Robinson and Crawford County was outstanding,” said Chief Curry. “IDOC will always appreciate their hospitality and appreciation. Most of all, we appreciate their patience and cooperation, as was proven once again by the final tip we received that led to the recapture of this offender.”
The Illinois Emergency Alarm System (ILEAS), a multi-jurisdictional mutual aid entity, assisted in this search by coordinating manpower, air support and other valuable resources. IDOC personnel on the scene included Chief Curry, Chief of Operations Joseph Yurkovich, Chief of Investigations and Intelligence Michael Hood, Deputy Chief of Operations Michael Atchison and Deputy Director, Southern District, Shannis Stock. They and other agencies directed many hardworking correctional officers and local law enforcement personnel.
