CARMI—The man in question, Carl Devoy, 55, was a business owner in Carmi (having purchased the old Western Auto store downtown), and used to work for the city. He was scheduled for a child support hearing from a 1998 divorce/support case 11.28.11. He was to have appeared in front of one of our most recent Second Circuit judges, former Franklin County state’s attorney Tom Dinn. Dinn is one of the most questionable judges in the circuit as far as his ascension to the bench; nobody’s sure just how he was qualified as judge, but the Franklin County powers-that-be apparently saw Dinn for the controllable dufus he is and just HAD to have him in there.
According to a source who was at the courthouse today on a case of their own, the man had just been ordered to pay $500 a month to his ex and his daughter in order to assist the daughter with college. Dinn granted the request to the ex, but Devoy was never in the courtroom for any of it. Instead, he stayed out in the east parking lot of the courthouse and, rather than go in and be involved in the case, he pulled out a gun and shot himself. The proceedings went on without the ex, Kimberly, or the daughter in question knowing what had happened. Then the ex’s attorney, having left the courtroom, walked back into the courtroom and announced what had happened. Dinn, with his keen perception of the obvious, opined how “sad and selfish” the man was to have done that. Gee, Dinn. I guess if your boyfriend were able to have children and took them away from you and forced YOU to pay a large chunk of your judgly paycheck every month, you’d be feeling kinda sad and selfish too.
The scene was called a suicide, and the coroner was called.
