We start the August-September Read the Lead with the top story from the back page, originating in Hardin County, about the literally county-wide community’s heart-touching response to the death of a young man whose goal was to be a volunteer firefighter: “Death of an inspiring teen brought community together”

HARDIN CO.— A terrible tragedy that claimed a young man’s life in Cave-In-Rock July 31 has brought the community together in ways few expected.
“We have always pulled together down here in Hardin [County] but this shook everybody to the core,” said one emergency services worker.
The ripple that went through the entire county when word went out that 17-year-old Dustin Winters had been gravely wounded by an accidental gunshot was unprecedented even for this tiny rural county, which has survived storms, devastating floods and its share of hard times.
“Dustin was just a special kid,” said one county resident. “He always had a smile to offer everybody he met.”
On the day of the tragedy, Dustin’s aunt and EMT Lucy Winters and paramedic Kathy Gibson were the first ones on scene where they found Dustin had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
Heartbreaking as it must have been, both Lucy and Kathy worked to stabilize Dustin and prepare him for transport.
Sources indicate that Sheriff JT Fricker was behind the wheel of the ambulance as it sped to the Rosiclare Hospital.
In the mean time an “All Call” went out for anybody who knew CPR to respond.
And that response was overwhelming.
