MT. CARMEL, Ill. - Mt. Carmel police had some good news and some bad news for folks and perps in the city, all of it contained in this MCPD activity report.

The good news came on April 3, when the Mt. Carmel Police Department conducted a sex offender registry check on all registered sex offenders within the city. Officers checked each offender to make sure they were in compliance with their terms, and all were found in compliance. Mt. Carmel Police say they will continue to do random checks in the future to help ensure public safety.

The bad news came on April 5, at least for one Mt. Carmel resident: That’d be Robert M. Hinderliter, 32, who on that day was arrested for Criminal Damage to Government Supported Property, Disorderly Conduct and Resisting/Obstructing a Peace Officer. Police were called to the area of the 1100 block of N. Mulberry Street in reference to a male subject running from the back lawn of a nearby residence. The caller suspected the subject may have broken into the residence. Officers arrived to find Hinderliter running in the area of the 100 block of E 12th Street. The officer attempted to stop Hinderliter, but Hinderliter continued to flee on foot. Once Deputy Bogard arrived on scene with his K-9, Hinderliter gave up and was placed under arrest. Officers found forced entry to the house in question but were unable to determine the owner at present time, since it is unoccupied. A charge of Disorderly Conduct was also taken against Hinderliter, from a nearby resident, who was disturbed by his behavior during the incident. Before transport to the jail, Hinderliter damaged the interior of the patrol vehicle by kicking it repeatedly. Hinderliter was transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged and held pending the setting of bond. This case is under investigation with more charges likely. Mt. Carmel Police were assisted by the Wabash County Sheriff’s Office.

Also on the 5th, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Kenneth C. Swatsley, 31, of Mt. Carmel, for Aggravated Domestic Battery, this following an incident with a family member in the 600 block of Cedar Street. Police were called to the area in reference to Swatsley being unwanted and acting disorderly. Once police arrived, they found evidence to indicate Swatsley battered a family member during a dispute. Swatsley was taken into custody and transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged and held pending a bond setting by a judge.
