U.S. DISTRICT COURT, BENTON, Ill. - The elderly gent who robbed a bank last year has been sentenced in federal court…and it’s a light sentence.
Court documents indicate that Arthur Bays, now 82, was sentenced yesterday, Thursday, March 21 to 10 weekends in jail as well as six months home confinement for a bank robbery Bays carried out at the State Bank of Whittington in Benton last July.
Bays, who claimed he was desperate for money when he robbed the bank with a toy gun, was able to make off with $12,500 in the incident. No one was injured and Bays was apprehended quickly.
Judge Phil Gilbert reportedly told Bays that he’d “never seen a criminal as old as him,” and that the sentence he imposed was one he “struggled with.”
