CARBONDALE POLICE FACING TICKET QUOTAS UNDER THREAT

CARBONDALE—The mayor of Carbondale has been revealed as one of the multitude of mayors and other public officials from across the country who have demanded ticket quotas from the officers of his city.

Joel Fritzler issued a letter to the police department on July 14, advising them of their “duties” which will henceforth include writing a certain number of tickets to citizens of the city, ostensibly whether they need them or not…because under ticket quotas, officers have to SEARCH for a reason to cite a citizen, instead of observing a legitimate infraction and acting upon it appropriately.

Fritzler joins a number of other officials across the country who, because of how cash-strapped their community or county is (because instead of stemming the flow of money, they merely spend more and look for ways to increase revenue), are demanding that the funding for the city’s/county’s operations will be forcibly removed from the citizens’ wallets by way of “citations” driven by quotas, which is in turn punishable by one means or another, or in turn rewarded by other means.

Here’s Fritzler’s letter; how do you feel about this?

To: Sworn Officers of the City of Carbondale’s Police Department

    From: Mayor, Joel Fritzler

    RE: Oath of Office

At the beginning of your career as a Carbondale Police Officer, you swore an Oath to either myself or a previous Mayor of Carbondale to “support and comply with the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the State of Illinois, the Ordinances of the City of Carbondale, the Rules and Regulations of the Carbondale Police Department, and the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, and that you would faithfully discharge the duties of the office of a Carbondale Police Officer according to the best of your ability.” I am a good example of how the direction of a life can change course a number of times during a lifetime so, I would completely understand if, at this time in your life, you feel that you are no longer able to fulfill the Oath of Office of a Carbondale Police Officer. You know much better than I that, being a police officer is not like being a retail clothing store clerk or a movie theater associate taking tickets. That’s why there isn’t an Oath of Office for movie theater associates. The lives of Carbondale residents and visitors, and your fellow officers are constantly in your hands, which is why police have to live by a higher set of rules and ethics. Just showing up to work as a store clerk might do is far from being good enough. I believe that Carbondale has the most professional police department in the State of Illinois and, having relatives that serve and have served as police officers, you have my deepest respect but, if you are no longer able to comply with our oath or faithfully discharge the duties of your office, you are not being true to yourself or to the residents of Carbondale. If this is the case, the best course for all concerned may be for you to seek a vocation that is more suited to your needs and goals. Whatever your decision may be, you will always have my respect and gratitude.

Here’s how Fritzler has chosen to address his faux pas. What a nut. Like he wouldn’t think someone in the department would leak the actual letter. Note: this is the first post he’s had on his facebook page since April…if THAT tells you anything.
