Rear-ended armored car sends passenger to the hospital

WAYNE CO., Ill. - According to authorities, earlier this afternoon (Wednesday, January 16), at approximately 12:44 p.m. a white 2018 Peterbilt armored truck, driven by 23-year-old Joseph W. Wright, of Evansville, Ind., was traveling westbound on Interstate 64 at milepost 97 when it was struck in the rear by a white 2011 Freightliner truck, semi-trailer combination, operated by David B. Huffman, 40, Lebanon Junction, Ky., after it had merged into the driving lane from the right hand shoulder of the Interstate.

Robert A. Ijames, 34 of Calhoun, Ky., passenger in the armored truck, was transported from the scene to an area hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash.

The armored truck was towed from the scene.

Following an investigation of both vehicles involved in the accident by an Illinois State Police motor vehicle officer, Wright, the semi driver, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Huffman, the armored car driver, was cited for driving on a flat tire.

The Illinois State Police were assisted at the crash scene by Wayne City Ambulance, Wayne County Ambulance, Wayne City Fire Department, Sully’s Towing, out Evansville and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
