WAYNE CO., Ill. - One of Southern Illinois' fave sayings is "Only in Wayne County..."
That'd be because if it's bizarre, strange, or just plain wrong, it's going to happen there.
And this is what's being reported today, Monday, November 19, the day after the first shotgun season for deer hunting wrapped up over the weekend. Authorities in Wayne are looking into it, but it's highly unlikely a resolution will ever be reached.
That's because it's all over a dead horse that got that way because someone (likely someone from Cook County who buys three grand worth of all-new Cabela gear before heading down south to hunt and has probably never seen a deer in his life outside of a zoo) probably thought it was a deer.
The horse, age 6 months, was found dead in its pasture this past Thursday (Nov. 15, right before shotgun season kicked off), and authorities believe a hunter mistook the horse for a deer, as it had sustained a gunshot wound to the bottom of its ribcage, and the wound came from a deer slug.
Naturally, because it's Wayne County, there are no reports as to whose horse it is, nor where, exactly, this pasture was located, thus making it difficult for anyone with any information to contact authorities with it.
However, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department are investigating, so if you possess some kind of ESP that can help you know exactly who did it and where this happened, you can call the sheriff’s department at (618) 842-6631, for all the good it will do.
