CARMI, Ill. - A violent sex offender got back on the police blotter yesterday, and a brazen alleged car theft rounded out the day Tuesday in Carmi police action.
The sex offender is none other then Elijah James, 28, whose exploits have been covered by this publication for more than a decade now (see at the hotlink on his name, but some of the articles require an e-Edition Archives membership).
James' stint in this report is brief: He was arrested at 3:42 p.m. yesterday (October 23) on a warrant to appear in his two pending misdemeanor cases of Aggravated Assault and Disorderly Conduct, and was able to bond out with $150 and a pending court date.
At 4:33 p.m., Carmi police were called to the Walmart out on the edge of town, where one Jennifer R. Parkhurst, 31, of the 400 block of Oak Street in Carmi, on a report of shoplifting.
Parkhurst was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor Retail Theft count, for which she posted the requisite $150 cash bond and went on her way with a court date.
Then last night at 8:25 p.m., one Robert Shaffer of the 700 block of Smith Street called 911 to report that someone had just stolen his Jeep Cherokee from his driveway.
At the same time as this 911 call, an ISP trooper was nearly struck by a vehicle driving with no lights and in the wrong lane on Illinois Route 14.
The trooper stopped the driver west of town, and, hearing the radio traffic in regards to the stolen Jeep, which matched the description of the vehicle he pulled over, he requested backup.
Carmi officers and a White County Sheriff's deputy responded. They arrested one Austin Cartmill, 18, of the 700 block of Sixth Street, on a count of Theft over $500, Possession of Stolen Property, Obstructing Identification and No Valid Driver's License. Cartmill remains locked up as of this evening.
