CARMI, Ill. - Carmi police had a bevy of issues to deal with this weekend, most of it involving theft or violence in some form.

A couple of break-ins lead the weekend activity report.

On Thursday, October 18, a resident of the 800 block of Fackney in Carmi reported at about 2:30 p.m. that someone broke into his house the night of the 17th and ransacked it, as well as broke items in the house. The front door, the resident reported, appeared to have been kicked in to gain entry.

On Friday, October 19 at 12:19 p.m., a resident on the 200 block of State Street advised that on the night of the 18th, someone entered her car parked in her carport and stole her debit card and $200 cash.

Friday morning, at about 10:06, police observed a man they knew to be wanted on a warrant and took him into custody.

The individual was Lonnie Duvall, 57, of North Fifth Street in Carmi; he was viewed pulling onto Route 1 from Murphy's USA gas station in front of Walmart. He was stopped and placed under arrest on a warrant for misdemeanor Retail Theft issued by White County. Bond was set at $150; Duvall was able to post bond to secure his release.

First thing Saturday morning (Oct. 20) at about 8:20 a.m., a Maunie woman was taken into custody at the city's Dollar General.

Celina J. Prince, 24, reporting an address on Washington Street in that riverside community, was arrested after being reported for alleged shoplifting, and was taken in on preliminary charges of Retail Theft and Criminal Damage to Property. What property was not specified in police reports.

Prince was able to post bond to secure her release.

Then at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, authorities responded to a report of a domestic on the 700 block of Maple Street in Carmi.

Brandi Holland

Brandi Holland, 31, reporting an address on the 300 block of Church Street in Carmi, was arrested at the residence of Thomas L. Coke, 63, and perpetual blotter queen Tabitha A. Swango, 37. This time, Swango was the victim and not the perp; Holland is alleged to have been highly intoxicated and apparently belligerent, and was accused of striking both Coke and Swango in the face. She was charged formally with misdemeanor Battery and Domestic Battery and held on a $500 cash bond.

Just a couple of hours later - 5:09 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 19 - Carmi city police stopped a car on Church Street at Cherry.

While reports don't indicate what the purpose was of the stop, it was nevertheless successful, as Angel D. Newman Boren, 38 of Washington, Ind., was arrested and charged with Driving on a Suspended License.

She was able to post the requisite bond for her release, but there's nothing mentioned in the reports about how she got home if she couldn't drive.

And then in late-night activity last night - at about 10:28 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 - a big brouhaha broke out at a location on the 100 block of West Webb Street, where it appears their hair dye might've gone a little too far into the heads of the sisters who use it.

Isabel Murdach

There, Carmi Police responded to a 911 report of an active domestic situation involving knives and guns.

Upon arrival, officers were able to locate a handgun that had been displayed during the altercation and were also informed that a knife had been displayed but no one had been cut.

As a result of the altercation, Desiree Murdach, 22, of the West Webb Street address in question, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Domestic Battery, and Isabel Murdach, 18, also of the same West Webb Street address, was arrested and charged with Domestic Battery and Consumption of Alcoholic Beverage by a Minor.

Carmi Police in this instance were assisted by the White County Sheriff's Department and the Illinois State Police.

It remains unknown whether anyone will be held responsible for the hair coloring atrocities observed here.
