RANDOLPH CO., Ill. - The number of deer in southern Illinois continues to plague drivers, and this very thing was the cause of a single-vehicle wreck yesterday afternoon in Randolph County.

Illinois State Police in District 13 DuQuoin report that the accident happened on Illinois Route 154 at Cheridan Road at 2:50 p.m. yesterday, Tuesday, October 2.

Preliminary investigative details indicate that a 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis being driven by Darcy M. Betsch, 46, of Courterville, was westbound at the above location when a deer ran in front of the car.

Betsch swerved to miss the deer, left the roadway, and struck a tree.

Betsch was transported to St. Louis University Hospital by Arch Helicopter, having sustained major injuries in the crash.

While ISP reported that Betsch did have her seatbelt on, she was otherwise cited for Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle.
