Mack’s at Lake of Egypt a dining experience!

LAKE OF EGYPT, Ill. - A beautiful Sunday afternoon prompted me feel the necessity for an outside picnic-type lunch.

What better place to enjoy the end of summer than to be on the lake.

Mack’s Lake Of Egypt Marina and Sports Center was the perfect spot to dine. Owner Fritzi Jaynes says it was unusually slow today but typical whenever there is the threat of rain.

Dining on the patio with a nice cool breeze coming off the lake was exactly what I had in mind. My taste buds were telling me the club sandwich was what they were screaming for. There must have been close to a half-pound of meat and cheese. Definitely shareable size; or, as in my case, enough for supper later. The spicy buffalo chips are a cross between a French fry and American fry with your choice of ranch or cheese sauce for dipping. I opted for the ranch.

I didn’t talk to Fritzi until after I ate and she said she wished I’d been more adventurous and tried the shrimp or something among her favorites, like the Italian Beef or the Prime Rib sandwich. "Our hamburgers are really good also," she said. "We patty them out by hand, no one else does that anymore."

The convenience store also has booths and you have the choices of eating there or the lounge or the patio.

Of course I couldn’t resist asking her about IGA. She says Trevor Borowiak took it over in 2001, only buying the business and not the name since they use Mack’s name there at the marina. She is just as in the dark as everyone else as to what his plans are and it’s possible he could put in another grocery store. She just doesn’t know and he hasn’t revealed any plans to them. He does have quite some time remaining on his current lease, so anything is possible.
