Senator helps Illinoisans understand where ISP is coming from with new concealed carry law

ILLINOIS—As you may know, the new law allowing concealed carry in Illinois is on the books, but isn’t effective yet.

Unlike laws that are “prohibitive” (restricting us from texting while driving, etc.), this law is “allowing,” which means, like cameras in the courtroom, it’s going to take months to implement it because ‘allowing’ laws aren’t immediate like ‘prohibitive’ laws are.

Senator Jason Barickman has sent us an email outlining what we need to do now, in advance of the Illinois State Police implementing their “system” for “allowing” us our Constitutional rights to carry concealed weapons in this state.

I thought you would like to know that Illinois State Police has posted a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page on the Firearm Concealed Carry Act (Public Act 98-63).  The FAQ can be read on our department’s website at this link.

I encourage you to please share this link and information with your friends and family members.  This FAQ, which was updated on Friday evening, addresses the following questions:

•    How will Illinois State Police (ISP) officers and local law enforcement respond to citizens who are carrying weapons?
•    Who needs an Illinois Concealed Carry License?
•    Are out-of-state Concealed Carry permit holders granted reciprocity in Illinois?
•    What is the cost for an Illinois Concealed Carry License?
•    How does a citizen apply for an Illinois Concealed Carry License?
•    How long will it take a citizen to obtain an Illinois Concealed Carry License?
•    What are the qualifications for an Illinois Concealed Carry License?
•    Where can citizens obtain firearms training?
•    What does the firearms training course consist of?
•    What are the qualifications to become a Concealed Carry Firearms Instructor?
•    What type of a firearm will I be allowed to carry concealed?
•    Will persons be allowed to open carry?
•    How can I register as a Concealed Carry Firearms Instructor?
•    Where can business owners or property owners obtain information about required signage?

If you have any additional questions not addressed in this FAQ section, please do not hesitate to contact me.  To receive email updates from me, please click here or reply to this email with “Subscribe” in the subject line.

Senator Jason Barickman

Barickman is joined by a host of other senators and representatives who are in support of our rights to carry concealed…but there’s nothing we can do to speed the process along as far as Illinois State Police go. It’s probably very accurately stated that ISP isn’t happy to see the new law go into effect; after all, they are used to being the ones with the guns and the right to carry them openly. The new law, of course, brings Illinois into the realm of other states who adhere at least to a degree with the Constitution, which gives us the right to bear arms.

Those who oppose it generally are among the number who fear we will use this right to keep and bear arms to protect ourselves from tyranny…NOT to have a “Wild West” scenario every day. We already have that…the criminals are the Wild West people, and we law-abiding citizens are helpless against them right now unless we become criminals too, and carry a weapon illegally.

The new law levels the playing field. And crime statistics will soon bear that out. But we have to get there first. So read up on the law, begin your training, and make plans to get your CC permit.
