ILLINOIS—First Baptist Church of University Park in south suburban Chicago has ignited heated online debate among parishioners and community members over the use of the church’s sign to make a radical political statement.

The digital readout on the sign now says, “It is safe to kill BLACK PEOPLE in Amerikkka.” The above photo can be found on the church’s Facebook page where a picture of the sign accompanies an invitation to a Town Hall meeting at the church tonight (07.15.13) from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.

The invitation offers invitees this information,

“In the wake of the Trayvon Martin verdict, (1) how do we respond in the face of injustice, and (2) how do we strategize to raise our children in a safe community?
Lets talk / plan / and strategize about it, so that we can leave with a plan to do something abut it! Don’t meet me there, beat me there!”

Comments on the church’s Facebook page have been overwhelmingly negative in response to the radical statement.
