ALTO PASS, Ill. - Of all my years living in southern Illinois I had never been to this quaint little town. Today (Sunday, August 19), that all changed with a road trip and wonderful meal.
Located on the Main Street of the little village of Alto Pass in Union County is the Root Beer Saloon, complete with great food and a decor unlike any I’ve ever encountered.
Waterfowl, I’m told, can’t be sold, traded or given away and has to be caught.
He also has a shop next door where he makes the most beautiful handmade guitars I’ve ever seen. He has been named as one of the top 100 guitar makers in the world, with guitars starting in price at $1,000.
The food was delicious; I enjoyed a Maryland Crab Cake flown in fresh from Maryland served with a raspberry vinaigrette; and for desert, homemade blackberry cobbler with ice cream and of course my beverage was none other than the root beer they are known for.
Their menus are posted on a blackboard and change daily; interestingly, they serve no red meat.
Hours are 11:30 til 3 Monday through Friday; and 11:30 til 5 on Saturday and Sunday .
