EFFINGHAM, Ill. - A truck driver from Michigan is the chagrined owner of a set of citations - one of them for Driving Under the Influence of Drugs - after a crash today on Interstate 70 in Effingham.
Illinois State Police in District 12 Effingham report that the crash occurred this morning (Friday, August 10) at 7:18 a.m.
Preliminary investigative details indicate that a white 2017 Freightliner box truck being driven by Emmanuel Chapman, 23, of Troy, Michigan, was traveling eastbound on I-57/70 at milepost 162 when the driver stated he fell asleep, left the south side of the roadway striking the guardrail, crossing the center lanes of traffic leaving the north side of the roadway, striking the concrete median barrier and coming to a rest in the middle lane of traffic.
A passenger in the truck, Michael Howd, 36, of Flint, Michigan, was injured and transported to St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Chapman, while uninjured, was cited for Improper Lane Usage, Driving a Commercial Vehicle While Fatigued, Possession of Cannabis While in a Commercial Vehicle, DUI-Drugs and Possession of Cannabis.
