Geezer-looking guy alleged to have robbed bank in Benton

BENTON, Ill. - Just when you thought you'd heard it all, along comes an old guy who's alleged to have conducted a brazen robbery.

A bank robbery, no less.

The Benton, Illinois, police department has posted information about the robbery that occurred this morning (Thursday, July 26) just after 9 a.m. Here's the report:

At approximately 9:11 a.m., the Benton Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery that had occurred at State Bank of Whittington located at 200 N. Main Street. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 70 years of age with white “goatee” style facial hair, wearing glasses, black-and-white ball cap, black jacket, and blue jeans. The suspect displayed a handgun in his waistband and demanded money from the bank teller. An undisclosed amount of money was taken. No injuries were reported. The suspect fled the scene in a silver Chevrolet Cruze. Benton, West City and West Frankfort Police Departments, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and FBI continue to investigate. Photographs have been attached and we’re asking for the public’s assistance with identifying the suspect. Please contact the Benton Police Dispatch at 618-435-8131 with any information. If you see the suspect, please do not approach, call 911.
