JEFFERSON CO., Ill. - A Mt. Vernon man is being held tonight in Jefferson County lockup, following a shooting last night that left his brother dead.

Authorities said that last night (Wednesday, July 4) at approximately 5:46 p.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 telephone call from a person indicating her husband, later identified as David Sloan, 34, of Mt.  Vernon, had been shot by his brother, Matthew Sloan, 36, of rural Mt. Vernon.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Litton's Ambulance, and Jefferson Fire Protection District personnel responded to 9806 East Webb Road in rural Mount Vernon. Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators of the Illinois State Police were called in to conduct an investigation.

As a result of the investigation, Matthew Sloan was arrested for homicide.

The incident is being investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County State’s Attorney, Jefferson County Coroner's Office, and Illinois State Police.

(Jack note: The above information is what JeffCo SD released; we were notified of this shooting very early this morning by friends of the family. These individuals advise that the situation was a horrific one; David Sloan and his wife had gone to visit Matthew Sloan. The two brothers had gotten into an argument, and Matthew Sloan went into a bedroom in his home and re-emerged with a shotgun, which he's alleged to have pulled up to his brother's face and shot him at point-blank range right in front of his wife. David Sloan died immediately. As of this afternoon, Matthew Sloan has been charged with three counts of First Degree Murder.)

More if we get it.
