Motorcycle driver and passenger seriously injured in Interstate crash

WILLIAMSON CO., Ill. - A motorcycle wreck on Interstate 24 at Interstate 57 in Williamson County sent a Mt. Vernon woman to an area hospital and  the Indiana man operating the bike to a trauma center in St. Louis with serious injuries.

Illinois State Police in District 13 DuQuoin said the crash occurred this morning (Monday, June 11) at 12:15 a.m.

Their report indicates that a 2006 Harley-Davidson bike driven by John R. Norton, 49, of Terre Haute, was exiting I-24 onto I-57 when Norton lost control of the motorcycle and it left the roadway.

After the motorcycle left the roadway, it overturned and ejected Norton and a passenger, Nichole Shaughnessy, 41, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

Norton was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries and Shaughnessy was transported to an area hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.

No citations have been issued; there's no word currently on their conditions.
