Man picked up on warrant after leaving dog in hot car at Walmart

CARMI, Ill. - The annual pet-in-a-hot-car plague brought attention to a young man yesterday at Carmi's Walmart, said attention leaving him hemmed up on an outstanding warrant arrest.

Police reports indicate that a call came in just before 7 p.m. last night (Thursday, June 7) regarding a dog in a white pickup truck on the parking lot of Walmart. There were several people gathered around the truck, and they advised that the dog had been left in the unoccupied vehicle for over 30 minutes. 

The officer ran the plates and had the owner paged from Walmart to meet the officer at the vehicle.

Cory J. O'Donnell, 25, of McLeansboro, arrived after the officer opened the door of the unlocked truck and roll the window down for the dog.

In the meantime, the officer had determined that there was a warrant for O'Donnell's arrest out of O'Donnell's home county of Hamilton, this for a simple traffic citation that O'Donnell. He was arrested on scene and transported to the county jail, where he was able to post bond on the warrant. There's no indication of how the dog was faring while his owner was being processed, but it's a pretty sure bet that Carmi PD kept the canine occupied...and was well-taken-care of.

A second incident occurred Thursday when later that night, at around 9 p.m., one Samantha Mosley, 20, of Carmi, turned herself in at the police department on a White County warrant for Retail Theft.

Mosley was booked and processed, and was able to post $150 to secure her release.
