GOLCONDA, Ill. - There's never a shortage of things to do in Pope County...they have one of the largest deer population in downstate, they have the beautiful Shawnee National Forest, and they have Golconda, where a very active group of community-minded people are always providing fun and interesting events for folks to do in their beautiful town.
This weekend, it's the Lusk Creek BBQ competition going on in a festival environment downtown. Not only is there a barbecue competition complete with trophies and prizes, but there are plenty of things to eat and drink, too, with lots of food trucks...there's even a beer and wine tent set up over by the stage (a very popular place with the heat today).
Further, the beautiful antiques shops, as well as the Pope County Museum (which has some AMAZING items) are all open today. The museum alone is worth the trip down here. As well, there are helicopter rides available over the Ohio...and that's a beautiful sight to see from the air.
So get out and get to festing in southern Illinois...the Pheasant Hollow Cajun Fest is going on over in Whittington; Old Settler Days is happening in Galatia. And if you know of any other fests going on this weekend, send us your pics! Post em at any of our social networking pages...and HAVE FUN!
