Marion, Benton drivers involved in pedestrian accident in Hamilton Co.; DUI cited

Pedestrian was struck by one of the vehicles; flown to regional hospital

HAMILTON CO., Ill. – A two-vehicle accident had a freak outcome in Hamilton County earlier today when one of the vehicles struck a pedestrian standing on the shoulder of the road where it occurred…and a driver from Marion was cited for DUI in the wake of it.

Illinois State Police in District 19 Carmi report that the incident occurred this morning (Saturday, September 28) at 9:21 a.m.

According to the preliminary traffic crash investigation, Jesse M. Saunders, 31 of Marion in Williamson County, who was operating 2006 Ford F-150 XLT, was northbound on Hamilton County Road 600E and was stopped at the intersection with Illinois Route 14.

Paul D. Drew, 57 of Benton in Franklin County, who was operating a 2012 International truck-tractor in combination with a dump semi-trailer, was eastbound on Illinois Route 14, approaching County Road 600E.

Saunders drove forward into the path of the truck-tractor/semi-trailer combination. The front of the truck-tractor struck the driver’s side of Saunders’ Ford pickup. Upon impact, the Ford traveled across Route 14 and struck Phyllis Sue Bowers, 69 of McLeansboro, who was a pedestrian standing on the north shoulder of 14.

Saunders was transported to an area hospital by ambulance and later flown to a regional hospital for further treatment.

Drew and Bowers both sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital by ambulance. Both units were towed from the scene.

Saunders was cited for Failure to Yield at a Stop Sign Intersection and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.

ISP was assisted at the crash scene by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s
Department, McLeansboro Police Department, McLeansboro Fire
Department, Harre Ambulance Service, Dave’s Towing, and Bowman
Auto Body and Towing.
