ENFIELD—Illinois State Police worked a two-car accident last night (Thursday, May 30, 2013) in Enfield on Highway 45 that resulted when an Evansville driver fell asleep at the wheel.
ISP said that the wreck occurred at 10:31 p.m. on U.S. Rt. 45 at Wilson Street in Enfield.
Richard A. Crane, 31, of Evansville, was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry; he had with him a passenger, Linda D. Crane, 49, also of Evansville, when Crane reported to ISP that he fell asleep and drifted into the northbound lane of travel.
In the oncoming lane was a 2013 Freightliner truck-tractor semi tanker being driven by Thomas A. Maramba, 39, of McLeansboro.
Maramba, ISP reported, observed the Crane car enter his lane of travel and veered to the left in an attempt to avoid the vehicle.
Crane reported he then awoke, observed headlights in his path of travel, and swerved to the right. The front passenger side of Crane’s Toyota stuck the passenger side of the semi. The Toyota then exited the roadway to the east and struck a utility pole.
The Cranes, who were both wearing their seatbelts, both sustained minor injuries in the crash and were transported by the White County Ambulance Service to Hamilton Memorial Hospital for treatment. Maramba wasn’t injured in the crash. Maramba wasn’t injured.
Don’s Bumper-to-Bumper in Carmi removed the Toyota from the scene; ISP was assisted by Enfield Police Department, Norris City Police Department, White County Sheriff’s Department, Enfield Fire Department and Enfield First Responders.
Crane was cited for Improper Lane Usage.
