Daisy Mae Sherman, Will County mug
WILL CO., Ill. - Authorities aren't being really clear on what a girl from Flora was doing up in Wilmington, Illinois, in far-flung Will County, but one thing they are clear on is the amount of heroin allegedly found in her car when she was busted.
And the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Daisy Mae Sherman, 19, are weird in and of themselves.
The whole thing broke last week, on Thursday, May 19, when early in the morning on the parking lot of the Van Duyne Motel in Wilmington, authorities called to the scene found a "female unconscious in a vehicle."
Responding authorities found a silver vehicle in the parking lot with Sherman passed out in the driver's seat, with head slumped and mouth open; and through the window of the driver's side they could also see what appeared to be a pipe on the floor near her foot. This lead them to believe she was suffering an overdose, so they began trying to get her attention, and eventually "gained entry" into the vehicle (no reports indicated exactly how that occurred.)
When Sherman came around, she told everybody that she was "sleeping in her car after having a fight with her boyfriend."
Of course while she was good and groggy, authorities asked her if they could search her car, and she gave consent, this after advising them, upon questioning, that she had no illegal substances in the car.
The car turned up a treasure trove of alleged dope, according to police reports.
They found several plastic baggies with a white powdery reside, one with a white powdery substance, a pill bottle, and of course the pipe on the floor.
The baggie with the substance, as it turned out, contained heroin.
Naturally, she at first denied using heroin, telling authorities that she'd quit way back when she was 18 and pregnant 11 months before. But then, she admitted that she'd picked up 13-15 bags of heroin with the boyfriend (ostensibly the one she fought with) on the day before. Then she admitted that she'd used the blue pipe to snort heroin, and had been sitting in her car the entire time (a day...? who knows) until the authorities found her.
Authorities asked her where her baby was, and Ms. Daisy advised that an uncle had temporary custody.
She was toted off to Will County Detention Center and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance; further charges are pending.
Sherman shows a current address on West Washington Street in Flora; she doesn't have any local charges that we can located, but it appears she might be related to another local Sherman who's a felon and a frequent flyer, Robert Sherman.
If there's an update on this, we'll bring it in the upcoming print edition, on stands June 1 and 2. Be watching.
