HARDIN CO., Ill.—A fire in the village of Elizabethtown this evening is indeed a battle as firefighters are working with sub-frigid temps that are freezing up the water hoses.
Reports indicate that the fire, at a home in the Rutherford addition on the northeast edge of town, has been burning freely as firefighters work hard to get the water to the flames before it freezes. Water from the hoses was reported turning to ice before they could effectively get it onto the house.
The home is reported to belong to Ben and Rachel Atkinson. No one was home at the time the fire was reported.
The fire department, along with Sheriff JT Fricker, were putting salt on the road where water from fire has frozen on the roadway, this at about 10 p.m. A fire truck has been dispatched to sit up at the water tower on Route 146 to slow down traffic because of the slick road.
Keep checking back as we continue to get updates.
