MT. CARMEL, Ill.—A Wabash County Unit School District #348 school board meeting last night (Monday, November 10) saw the reading of a letter of resignation from the woman who just a week ago entered a plea of guilty to sexual abuse of one of her students.

The school board held a 20-minute closed session (exemption: personnel) after which Kirby J. Cheesman’s letter of resignation was read aloud by schools Superintendent Tim Buss, without further comment or elaboration:

I regret to inform you that I am submitting my resignation as a special education teacher for Wabash County Unit School District #348. I enjoyed working with the great faculty and staff at Mt. Carmel High School and appreciated the opportunity to instruct the students of our community.

Sincerely,
Kirby Cheesman

Cheesman, 28, was not present at the meeting. She’s been on leave since the beginning of September, when the incident of sexual abuse of a 16-year-old male student came to be under investigation.

Be sure to pick up the November 2014 edition of Disclosure, as it features a full article and a letter about the situation.
