CARBONDALE, Ill.—Carbondale’s mayor has formally announced that he won’t be seeking the job in 2015.
Don Monty made the statement this week via reading a letter on the subject at last night’s city council meeting.
Monty was bumped up from councilman to mayor back in February of this year when then-mayor Joel Fritzler announced his resignation, which was based on a move to Arizona where Fritzler had taken a new job.
Monty has been with the City of Carbondale in some capacity for a number of years, including 40 years as a city employee (ending with a city manager position, from which he retired in 2006), an elected position as councilman in 2011, and then ascent to mayor this year.
The reason for the no-bid was apparently not given.
However, Carbondale is now plagued with police problems, and, given the recent termination of former chief Jody O’Guinn, and the lawsuits the city is facing due to what’s perceived as incompetence with their police force, it’s looking like not very many people are interested in the job of mayor.
How it develops remains to be seen; more as we get it.
