UPDATE 11:30 PM
THE MASSIVE POLICE PRESENCE IS HARRISBURG IS RELATED TO THE EARLIER CARJACKING.
OUR TEAM HAS LEARNED THAT TYREE NEAL WAS THOUGHT TO HAVE GONE TO HIS DAD’S PLACE IN HARRISBURG AFTER HE DITCHED THE CAR IT WAS ALLEGED HE HIJACKED.
WE’VE BEEN TOLD THAT THE HOUSE WAS VISITED, AND NEAL WAS NOT PRESENT.
MORE AS WE GET IT; ORIGINAL POST BELOW.
HARRISBURG, Ill.—Our team is on the scene of a massive law enforcement presence near the city park, in the vicinity of West Elm and Capitol streets, in Harrisburg.
We were initially informed that about two hours ago (9 p.m.), there was an armed carjacking in or around Marion.
Apparently, IF this is the same case, the guy who did the carjacking headed toward Harrisburg, and that prompted an overwhelming response of law enforcement officers decked out in riot gear.
An airplane has been circling overhead in the vicinity of the 700 block of West Elm and Capitol streets, not far from the city park.
State police is also on scene, and one entity has a K9 unit searching. Officers have been seen searching ditches in the area.
The carjacking suspect—IF this is related to this incident in Harrisburg; it may be totally unrelated—is Tyree Neal, 27, of Carbondale. He was chased down to New Burnside in Johnson County, where he left the car abandoned and was believed to have been traveling on foot.
Whether authorities believe he somehow got up to Harrisburg…they’re not saying.
Authorities are leaving the scene as of about 11:15 p.m., however.
We’ll keep you updated as our team provides information.
