GIBSON CO., Ind./FAIRFIELD, Ill.—A man who lost his life in a morning crash yesterday in Gibson County has been identified by officials as a former Fairfield alderman and mayor.
Harold Tubbs, 72, was the driver of a 2001 International school bus owned by Frey Produce of Wayne County, Illinois, at about 10:26 yesterday morning. According to officials investigating the accident, the bus was northbound on Indiana 165 at County Road 700 South in the Owensville community area when the bus dropped off the east shoulder; this caused Tubbs to overcorrect, at which time he crossed both lanes of traffic and struck a tree on the west side of the road.
There were no passengers in the bus. It’s uncertain whether the impact was what proved fatal to Tubbs, or whether there may have been another cause. Authorities are investigating, and an autopsy was planned as of yesterday, with no set date available.
Tubbs was a former ward alderman in the city of Fairfield for a number of years, as well as a one-time mayor.
