shutterstock_170624942Despite the state’s fiscal, political and economic headaches, Illinoisans apparently feel pretty good about their well-being, according to a recent survey.

Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index for 2013 ranked each state’s overall well-being based on six factors: life evaluation, emotional health, work environment, physical health, healthy behaviors and basic access [to services]. More than 2 million surveys have been completed, making it the world’s largest dataset on the subject.

“The Well-Being Index provides insights needed to improve health, increase productivity, and lower healthcare costs within any community,” the report noted.

State rankings are broken down into five groups, which are color-coded on the map below. Green is the highest ranking and red is the lowest.

  1. Green: 1-10
  2. Blue: 11-20
  3. Yellow: 21-30
  4. Orange: 31-40
  5. Red: 41-50

Illinois improved quite a bit from 2012. Out of the six factors, there was an improvement in three, no change in two and a slight drop in one. And even better, Indiana can’t pull the “stillinnoyed” card on us this time.

The findings are determined by resident responses. To be clear, the survey measures how Illinoisans feel about themselves, their health and lifestyles, not how they view the state in terms of its political, fiscal or economic landscape.

Along with the statewide synopsis, Illinois’ major metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) received rankings out of the nation’s 189.
