COUNTY DEPUTY RESIGNS TODAY IN OPEN COURT

LAWRENCE CO., Ill.—The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department is now officially one deputy short after being unofficially without the presence of Dennis York for more than a year.

That’s because today, York resigned his position with the department in Lawrence County circuit court in exchange for dismissal of serious battery charges against him.

Regular readers will recall that York, long known as one of the most violent officers in Lawrence County, lost his temper in a late March 2013 incident in which he actually injured county prosecutor Chris Quick. York’s fit on the morning of March 28, 2013, actually sent Quick to a hospital in Terre Haute to see just how badly his hand was injured when York slammed the lower portion of the double door to Quick’s office area and caught Quick’s hand up in it…and it also got him an Order of Protection, paid leave, and ultimately, multiple charges including two counts of Aggravated Battery.

A special prosecutor was called in and resulted in formal charges earlier this year. However, apparently a deal was made with York, wherein if he resigned, all charges against him would be dismissed. At a scheduled hearing in the case today in Lawrence County Circuit Court, that’s what York did, and the charges were dropped.

Unfortunately, York retains his police certification and so can go on to be a threat to another municipality, village or county if he so chooses. Hopefully, after other incidents of violence over the past 15 years in Lawrence County, this will be the swan song for his police career, and York will stay out of the public eye from this point forward…but if he doesn’t, we’ll be there to cover it for you, just like we’ve done since 2003 in Lawrence.
