CLAY CO., Ill.—Clay County Sheriff Andy Meyers has advised this morning that the department is getting closer to determining the identity of the suspect in Monday’s drive-off from Knapp Mart in Clay City.

Meyers said he received the call of a drive-off from a gas pump at the convenience store at about 4:23 p.m. Monday, June 7.

He and members of his department were able to locate the suspected vehicle at about 4:30-4:40, which was westbound toward Louisville off Sailor Springs Road. Pursuing at speeds of about 75 mph (which is literally “high-speed chase” in that area, considering the roads and shoulders thereof), Meyers said that because there was some traffic in the area both being passed and oncoming, he decided to break off that pursuit after seven or eight miles, because they had good information on the incident.

The driver had been reported to Disclosure Monday to have been a female, but Meyers clarified that it was indeed a male suspect, and his department has a few more people to talk to before they proceed further with the case; however, he says he feels confident they’re about to resolve it.

More as we get it; keep checking back.
